After the murder of her father, Ryuuko Matoi has been wandering the land in search of his killer. Kill La Kill is one of the most over the top series I have seen. It is brought to us by the same people behind [Gurren Lagann](http://anilist.co/anime/2001/TengenToppaGurrenLagann). The only difference is that Kill La Kill doesn't really care about its story, it's here to be entertaining. Really, it's just fun to watch.

A hot headed transfer student, Ryuko Matoi, heads to Honnouji Academy to find the murderer of her father. The only thing she has is half a pair of giant scissors, which is supposedly the weapon that killed her father. Honnouji Academy is run by the student body president, Satsuki Kiryuin, and her word is law. Ryuko believes that Satsuki has murdered her father but before she gets to talk to her, she has to face many other students at the school and work her way up to Satsuki. 

Honnouji Academy is a kind of school where you get what you deserve. There are rankings and they determine where you live and who you are. Students can also recieve Goku Uniforms which contain certain threads called Life Fibers. These Life Fibers are special in the fact that they grant the user superpowers. Then there are the Kamui (Godrobes), which are entirely composed of Life Fibers.

Matoi's father passes a Kamui down to her and it's a (talking) sailor uniform. With this Kamui, she proceeds to challenge students at Honnouji in order to get to the top and challenge.

The premise is very interesting and I was hooked from episodes 1. Not many shows can do this to me. The story can get predictable (where it's a showdown against someone new each week) until the middle of the show, where you are hit with a plot twist. This plot twist will make things "interesting". This is meant to be a spoiler free review but really, the story is at most decent.

Ryuko's Kamui is names Senketsu (Fresh-Blood). He can actually converse with her which makes for interesting scenes and he really adds flavor to the cast. Ryuko later befriends Mako Mankanshoku. Mako is rather "derpy" (you'll see once you watch the Hallelujah scenes). While most people didn't like her at all, I appreciated her in the cast. She adds the comic relief to this series.

The president of Honnouji, Satsuki, is a tough girl who can have her way if she wants it. She is in charge of the Four Devas (or Elite Four), which is a group of 4 students with the highest rank in school, allowing them to have issued uniforms with the most Life Fiber. You can really just think of these students as the Elite Four from Pokemon.

My favorite character by far is Aikuro Mikusugi. He is a school teacher at Honnouji but once you find out his true motives, you'll see that he's just _fabulous_.

The characters are probably this show's strong point. Their chemistry allows for a fun viewing experience.

The animation in Kill La Kill isn't the best, but it's really derpy and funny. Almost reminds me of Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt. It's not really that serious and it's just plain ridiculous and funny. This definitely isn't a show that you would watch for the art. Kill la Kill is known for its fair share of fanservice (and manservice too). Technically, it's a magical girl anime. Ryuko will undergo a transformation whenever she does battle with her Kamui.

The OST is another great part to this show. Hiroyuki Sawano (who has done work for Shingeki no Kyojin, Aldnoah Zero, and Guilty Crown), wows us with a bunch of great insert songs. I wasn't a fan, however, of how the same exact song would come up every episode  ~!Don't lose your  WAAAAYYYYY!~

Really, I just watched this show because I was having fun with it. The story and animation were okay at best, but does any of that really matter once your having fun? I think you will like this show a lot, not because it has super high production value but because of all the balls-to-the-walls action.

Kill La Kill is a great action series. It's funny, got a serious plot, and some great fighting scenes. The cast contains its serious characters and surprisingly, many silly ones too. I was flipping out most of the time during this show because things just got way too legit and over the top. You will enjoy this show a lot more if you see Gurren Lagann first because KLK has so many references to it. Despite its shortcomings, Kill La Kill is a great show if you just want to have a good time watching something.

There’s an old saying, that ‘clothes make the man.’ At Honnouji Academy, however, clothes make more than just the man… They make the warrior, they make the authority, and they separate the powerful from the weak. You see, at this school, classes are more than just those things you struggle to stay awake through while fantasizing about the dreamy classmate a few seats over… They’re the things you’re bound by, as part of an ironclad caste system. Depending on your level in that caste system, you may or may not be given a Goku uniform, which are special school uniforms that amplify the natural abilities and club-related interests of their respective wearers. The more powerful the uniform, the more stars you’re granted, from one to three… With the very top position occupied by the stone-faced, cold-hearted Satsuki Kiryuin, the Student Council President who runs the school as if it’s her own personal dictatorship. She lords over her school, which itself lords over the town, with no living being opposing her rule.

Enter Ryuko Matoi, a teenage nomad with a chip on her shoulder and one half of a giant pair of scissors by her side, looking for answers regarding the mysterious death of her father and taking no prisoners in her quest for those answers. With a unique sentient Goku uniform named Senketsu by her side, a hyperactive best friend giving her a place to stay, and a shady teacher constantly trying to convince her to get naked(for surprisingly non-rapey reasons), will this loudmouthed punk have what it takes to raze Satsuki’s rubric regime, or is she facing a literal uphill battle that she can’t possibly win?

For those of you who haven’t read my April reviews, I like to describe Studio Gainax’s animation quality as being ‘inconsistent.’ Considering how abundant this problem is, I would expect the same from any animation studio that could ever spin off from Gainax… And yet, Studio Trigger has proven me wrong. Trigger was founded by two of Gainax’s former members, Hiroyuki Imaishi and Masahiko Ohtsuka, as they left the company in 2011. Yes, this studio is only four years old, with only a few titles under their belt, and yet they produced one of the most unique visual wonders of that time period.

I have never seen an anime that looked quite like Kill La Kill before. It seems to take the fast paced frenetic action of Gurren Lagann and combine it with the smooth, western character and art design of Panty and Stocking, effectively taking the best aspects of both shows while cancelling out the ugly shortcuts that originally plagued them. This makes it look more like a Looney Toons project than anything you’d naturally expect from the anime medium. Only, you know, with boobs instead of rabbits. It completely avoids the awkward frame rate drops that normally occur whenever the action speeds up in a Gainax show, and which is normally my biggest complaint about their animation, managing to look smooth even through it’s more demanding shots.

Of course, whether it’s able to do this because they have a relatively high budget or because they’re extremely good at managing an average budget, I honestly can’t tell. It uses a lot of your classic moneysaving shortcuts, such as items and people moving as though they’ve just been cut out of the screen via photoshop, but they’re used so deliberately and so stylistically that it’s difficult to tell whether or not it was ever done out of necessity. Even when the characters have been reduced to frozen talking heads, there will almost always be something else moving on screen, whether it’s the clouds in the background, someone’s hair in the wind, or even just the design on their uniform. This is a really good line to blur, and it keeps up really well with the breakneck pace of the series.

Of course, the outstanding art direction and exquisitely detailed backgrounds don’t hurt, either. There was a lot of great care taken with the visual aspect of this series, from the memorable character designs that tell you volumes about the students and soldiers they correspond to before you even hear them speaking, to the CG art that somehow looks natural, even when it shares screen time with the two-dimensional aesthetic of the characters. The soundtrack is surprisingly subtle, being one of the only aspects of Kill La Kill that comes even close to that word. I don’t even really want to call it background music, as it’s never wasted on scenes that don’t need it… It’s more like support music, used to amplify the effectiveness of action scenes and emotional climaxes, or just as tonally appropriate themes for the central characters. The two most memorable tracks… Aside from the awesome opening and closing themes… are the chilling theme music that heralds the terrifying villain Nui Harime, and the blood pumping Before My Body is Dry, which kicks in with the scream “Don’t lose your way” every time Ryuko turns the tide in battle. And as for the canon in-story music? You know your soundtrack is going to be awesome when one of your primary villains uses a marching band for a weapon.

If I had seen the English dub by this time last year, it would have instantly had a guaranteed spot on my “Favorite Anime Dubs” post, and for pretty much the same reasons that Toradora made it in. Hell, this dub is so perfect that the two shows probably would have tied for second place, which isn’t surprising since they were released by the same company at around the same time. Fledgling voice actor Erica Mendez, who got her start only a few years ago by playing the voice of Rainbow Dash in several Brony videos, proves her mettle as the tough, gravelly voiced Ryuko, having no trouble navigating this probably throat-destroyingly intense role through all of it’s complexity. Christine Marie Cabanos shows us once again how awesome she can be when used properly, keeping up admirably in her role as the fast-talking Looney Toon Mako.

It’s difficult to pick a standout performance in a dub where everyone is so perfect in general, but if I had to choose a favorite, there are two that come to mind, and they’re both supplied by veteran voice actors with some serious clout in their resumes. The first one is Carrie Keranen, who’s probably most well known for playing Casca in Berserk, and in Kill La Kill, she plays the duplicitous school dictator Lady Satsuki. Her voice is very strong and powerful throughout the series, making for some rousing speeches, with a sense of restraint at other times that hides the duality of her character. The other one is Stephanie Sheh, who is known for regularly getting typecast as high-pitched girly-girl characters, and then stunning the crap out of people whenever she breaks away from that mewling moe mold. She has a lot more talent than people give her credit for, and it’s never been more apparent than in her portrayal of Nui Harime, who doesn’t come into the series until an Earth-shattering reveal at the halfway point. Her voice is sweet, high pitched, and overly-affectionate, yet Sheh’s performance is still dripping with malice and cruelty below the surface. Over-all, the dub is just as good as the sub, so you should be able to watch either track without complaint.

If you’re watching Kill La Kill for the first time, it is perfectly understandable to go through a case of some sensory overload. This series hits the ground running, assaulting you with it’s ridiculous premise, it’s complicated plot, slapstick, stylized violence and constant, gratuitous, unapologetic fan service from both genders. It can become confusing very early on, and what’s worse, it might even lose your interest by the end of disk one. It’s a lot to take in, and it doesn’t bother easing you into it, so you’re going to have to really trust me when I tell you that everything about it… Yes, literally everything… Makes perfect sense by the end, in either an on-the-surface or metaphorical way.

The main plot, for example, may seem like a random collection of excuses to see the cast as close to naked as Japanese TV standards will allow, what with the skin-baring Kamui uniforms, the instant stripping of anybody who’s defeated in battle, and a violent clash of philosophies about whether or not clothing is necessary or evil. As we uncover more of this bizarre world’s backstory, and the plot twists begin to unravel before us, you’ll find that the entire scenario is surprisingly believable, as ridiculous as it all might be. I won’t go into too much details… Spoilers and all, you know… But what I will do is compare it to Gurren Lagann, who’s second half seemed to rely on the idea that if the world’s population reaches a certain number, the moon will crash into it, despite no attempt at explaining why or how this stipulation came to be. Kill La Kill is a lot more thorough than that, and doesn’t rely on the stupidity of the audience to sell it’s ideas.

Which doesn’t explain the weird nature of Ryuko’s powers. Her weapon is an article of clothing that leaves virtually nothing to the imagination, while stealing blood from it’s host and magical threads from it’s defeated enemies. Believe it or not, this isn’t just some random battle outfit that was deliberately designed to be as pervy as possible… Although that kind of thing is hardly uncommon in any medium, so I can’t blame you for thinking it. It’s much more than that. I can explain this, and the good news is that it’s not a spoiler!

As I mentioned earlier, Trigger is an apple that fell from the tree of Studio Gainax. Gainax has a long history of exploring the theme of growing up, in terms of coming of age and puberty. The problem with that is that, if all the drills in Gurren Lagann didn’t tip you off, they tend to focus on the male side of this. What Trigger did with Kill La Kill, possibly intentionally, was infuse it with a FEMALE puberty metaphor. In the first half of the series alone, you’ve got her developing her powers by making an occasional blood exchange (Getting her period), collecting fibers (Growing the pewbz) and becoming comfortable with her body. The metaphor even goes as far as to suggest that after losing too much blood, she can turn into an uncontrollable rage monster, and all this complicated symbolism about her budding sexuality only feeds into Kill La Kill’s deeper metaphors.

Yes, you heard me right, there are deeper metaphors in Kill La Kill. I’ve heard a lot of reviewers say that it doesn’t have any real depth, but that it’s okay, because it doesn’t need depth, which I respectfully disagree with. As any anime fan who prefers the original FMA series over Brotherhood will tell you, even when depth isn’t necessary, it’s still highly appreciated and can elevate a good show into a great show. With Kill La Kill, you just have to know what you’re looking for, and once you start to notice it, a bunch of light bulbs WILL start going off in your head as you start to piece it together. To give you as unspoilery a taste as I can, Kill La Kill has a lot to say about the subject of conformity.

Now, when you hear the word conformity, your mind will almost certainly give you an image of a fifties style American family… Two parents, two children, a dog, a white picket fence, and the smiling mother doing all the chores for her smarmy bucktoothed son. Basically, the kind of world that Pleasantville deconstructed. But the truth is that conformity in Japan is much more involved than it ever was here. Not only is it far more widespread, but it’s still a major part of their culture to this day. From what I’ve heard from a few people I know who’ve traveled there, conformity in Japan is so bad that when businessman go out for a job-related meal, everybody will order the exact same thing that their boss ordered in an attempt to impress him. It’s that bad.

In Kill La Kill, all you need to keep in mind is that clothing… Specifically school uniforms, and especially the Goku uniforms… Represent conformity to traditional values. Nudity, or even the simple act of wearing your own street clothes, represents individuality and self expression. As proof of this, Satsuki’s kamui is referred to several times as her ‘wedding dress,’ despite the fact that she is at no point in the story given anything close to a love interest. This is because marriage is also a huge part of Japanese conformity… It’s extremely difficult to get a job if you’re single, and if you’re a woman, you lose a huge chunk of your individual rights the moment you say “I do.” On top of this, the main villain of the series is at one point shown crucified, in an obvious reference to Christianity… Not because she’s a martyr, but because she represents morality and the very same repressive traditional values that the series is cautioning us against.

But even if you ignore all that, Kill La Kill is still notable for it’s progressive representation of gender roles. Not only is the fanservice split between both genders, but the male characters have little to no effect on the ambitions and arcs of the female stars. They have no love interests to comment on them not being ladylike(Are you taking notes, Type Moon?), nor are any of them fighting or striving for somebody’s affection, or being saved by a stronger male when the going gets too tough. This is rarer than you might think, as even Sailor Moon and Misaka Mikoto need a man by their side at some point or another. It’s also not uncommon for female characters to be designed so that you’ll root for them to survive rather than to succeed(Or, in video games, you wind up playing them for the sake of protecting them). With Ryuko, you root for her for the same reasons that you root for Goku or Yusuke… Because she’s awesome, she kicks ass, and you want to see her tear down the school and put it’s authority in it’s place.

Even her ultra-revealing battle outfit has some nuance to it. In the beginning, it’s an incredibly awkward and embarrassing look for her, and this hampers her ability to fight the much more convicted Satsuki. The audience at this point will presumably have the same reaction her male onlookers have, ranging from ‘that’s hot’ too ‘that’s sick and shameful.’ But as she becomes more comfortable with it, a strange thing happens… People around her gradually begin to forget about the skin she’s showing, and focus on the fact that she’s one of the toughest and most intimidating fighters they’ve ever seen. The eroticism also wears off for the viewer, for as Ryuko develops as a character, you’ll stop seeing her Kamui as an exploitation of nubile underaged flesh, and you’ll start seeing it the same way you see the outfits of heroes like Superman, Batman and Ironman… When the costume comes on, the gloves come off, and you’re excited to know that somebody’s about to get their shit kicked in. Throw in an adorable pooch and a few cautionary tales about not forgetting where you’re from, and you’ve got a recipe for a Killer of a good time.

Kill La Kill is available from Aniplex of America. They knew they had a bankable title on their hands, and they’ve priced it as such. It was released stateside as five individual discs, ranging in price for thirty dollars per DVD to sixty dollars per Blu-ray, to eighty dollars per Blu-Ray/DVD special edition combo pack. That’s a hefty price, so if you’re able to find a good deal, take it. I personally considered it a steal when I got the whole series on DVD for eighty, but for those of you who’s pockets aren’t that deep, it’s available for legal streaming on Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll.

I’ve criticized certain titles in the past for having depth, but being too inaccessible to casual viewers who won’t be willing or able to understand it. With Kill La Kill, this really isn’t an issue. The depth in it enhances the story, but never holds it back. Even if you’re watching it with your brain turned off, it’s still a big, loud, over-the-top action series with great production values, a lot of heart and a lot of great characters. It succeeds at almost everything it tries to do, and it just gets better and better every time I watch it. That’s not to say it’s perfect, of course…  The pacing can sometimes be way too fast, and the first few episodes can be incredibly abrasive for some viewers.  Hell, my first time through, I didn’t even really get into it until episode five, but once it had me, I never wanted it to let me go.  I give Kill La Kill a 9/10.

Way smarter than people give it credit for.

Right. Let's talk about Kill la Kill. If there's one show out there that will proudly take the title of 'Extravagant Craziness', then this show will do just that and display it in a blinding beacon for the whole world to see; while being bare-naked in fact! Or to put it another way, it's basically an extraordinary trip through everything that you can find in an action anime.

My reaction, or set of reactions I should say, from the first episode can be extended throughout the whole show. That one single episode is honestly enough to outline what Kill la Kill's explosive entertainment is all about: a condensation of bewildering, eccentric, exciting, loud, crazy, eroticized, flashy, and wacky qualities. And there are 24 episodes of that. I think it's easy to visualize just how wild of a ride this was.

So, without further ado...

Enter Honnouji Academy! One crazy school where powerful clothes decide your social hierarchy and shouting like a maniac is everyone's favorite pastime. You can find a nudist teacher who has nipples that glow a purplish pride, all kinds of not-so-normal clubs, and a strong student council called the Elite Four that's led by an even more strong girl named Satsuki here. Yeah, a pretty weird school to be enrolled to but worry not! Beneath all of these stylized absurdities, there's an actual story that knows how to intensify common battle tropes to entertaining levels, with a chain of events that never fails to leave me excited for the next one.

Ryuuko Matoi is the protagonist we're following this time around. After circumstances led to her finding Senketsu, a sentient sailor suit who grants her great powers, she's now able to start an arduous journey and challenge Honnouji Academy, the place where she can find the answers to the murder of her father. A loner at first, but gradually accumulates into a girl who is reckless, badass, easily embarrassed, and earnest all at the same time, she personifies what it means to be a well-rounded female lead. The first half is particularly essential to establish the crazy world of Kill la Kill, although the seemingly constant clashing does make it a bit draggy at times. However, it's still important in providing a background to the parentless Ryuuko; most importantly, in how she grows up to being taken in by an eccentric family. She might look like someone who only has an attitude to fight anyone for her own benefit, but when you see her softening up to caring people, blandness is definitely not a part of her characterization.

Of course, other characters are also here to steal the show. Not a single one of them are what you should consider to be normal people. Just imagine what it's like when a show has a large cast of unrestrained quirkiness—with all boasting their own crazy fighting style and personality—then let them duke it out wherever they go. Hopefully, what you imagined is a fast-paced battlefield full of exaggerated entertainment. From tough people like Satsuki and the Elite Four, to the weird exhibitionist teacher I mentioned before, and even buffoons like Mako, everyone weaves together into an overall thrill that's simply engaging to experience the whole way through.

Another thing worth mentioning are the overarching themes that are entwined within Kill la Kill itself. The family stuff I've discussed already is perhaps the most notable one, but things like fascism in Honnouji Academy, womanhood through the female characters, and the fashion of the clothing powers made of Life Fibers—which serves as another pivotal mystery in conjunction with the murder of Ryuuko's father—are some of the other topics that are present here. These underlying connections to real-world society may be glazed by over depending on how much knowledge you have, but if you pick them up, you'll realize there are a lot more interesting layers to this show than just mere exaggerations and fan services.

Then there's the art. Yep. The one that's responsible for giving the show its own distinctive style—and it's marvelous to look at. The cel-shaded appearance exudes so many great personalities, with Trigger using a large number of visual techniques such as warm red tones, magnified expressions, bold typography, blinding rays of light, bizarre clothes designs, physics-defying animation, dramatic speed lines, and a mostly well-blended use of CGI to go all over the place; anywhere and anytime it wants. As simple as that. It embraces chaos and it's not afraid to be chaotic, which makes up for a lot of exciting action scenes. The only thing that slightly diminishes the show's fast-paced nature is with its tendency to repeat certain scenes, but they aren't detrimental enough to ruin the epic cinematography.

Similarly, an arrangement of booming soundtracks can be heard alongside the visual, another technical aspect that packs an energy to turn the over-the-top levels up to the highest elevation. Most notably for the character themes, every time the tracks start playing in the background, you'll know it's time for the scenes to get some majestic propulsion. And I also have to say. This show is loud. The characters are loud, the battles are loud, the comedies are loud. Roaring is what it will always blast and there's never a dull moment around when you have that for the entire run-time.

In the end, Kill la Kill is a crazy show, but it's crazy good. It takes everything that is great in an action anime and energizes them up like an adrenaline rush, making for an entertainment that's a blast to watch through. Just don't lose your way watching this. Stay on the path for the entire ride, because you're about to get fully pumped-up.

Sendo essa última uma herança da escola dos formadores do estúdio. Contudo, Project A-Ko apresenta fórmulas e interações de personagens muito semelhantes. Bem como o característico ludismo e ritmo rápido.

Integrado por uma boa gama de OSTs, a música ganha grande destaque na série, atua como múltiplos veículos durante os episódios, sejam eles de intensificação ou caracterização. Profere essência as personagens e sempre está em sincronia com o sentimento vigente. 
Sem dúvidas, um dos importantes componentes da identidade da obra.

__Roteirização__
O roteiro carece em renovação quando  comparado a títulos anteriores dos mesmos autores. Reutiliza inúmeros artifícios e elementos de construção, como o próprio enredo, que assume uma postura semelhante. Igualmente às reviravoltas, mistérios, ganchos e métodos de tensão ou complicação. De tal forma que acabou tornando os acontecimentos previsíveis.
Contudo, não se pode aplicar o mesmo à predominante estilização que guia o roteiro, englobando utilizações de clichês e pontos absurdos. Pois, essa exerce papel fundamental no desempenho da obra e possui objetivo lúdico. O que leva ao tópico da suma performance. 
A despeito de sua estrutura em si, o roteiro acaba sendo muito funcional, por conta de suas aliadas técnicas de composição visual e direção (geral e de som). Não há um foque em ser inovador, mas, sim, em construir algo altamente refinado, e nessa tarefa a obra se sai muito bem.

__Ritmo__
Um enredo de alta constância, com diversas informações percorrendo conjuntamente as cenas através de um ritmo rápido. 
Essa abordagem auxiliou positivamente a compor a ação e manter a narrativa consistente. Entretanto, contribuiu negativamente a um "efeito de poluição", caracterizado por uma imparável enxurrada de conteúdo que prejudicou a digestão das cenas. É um veículo indispensável à direção, porém, que poderia ter sido melhor aplicado em determinados episódios.

__Desconstrução de Temática__
Kill la Kill traz consigo diversas temáticas saturadas de seu período, no entanto, de maneira satírica ou destorcida.
A escola é uma analogia a um regime ditatorial. Os corpos docentes e discentes são regidos por um sistema hierárquico de roupagem militar. Os clubes estudantis são como suas frotas. Seus membros são caricatos. E vários outros pontos do anime são sátiras com gêneros que permeiam esta temática. 

__Nuance__
Nos episódios 09, 10 e 11 ocorrem algumas das lutas da Ryūko contra os 4 Grandes da Academia. Durante esse ocorrido, podemos notar com clareza as nuances do anime.

Uma conclusão óbvia que muitos personagens demoram a alcançar nessa clássica situação. No entanto, que, nessa cena, não funciona e tem finalidade cômica.

Essa é apenas uma pequena alteração, dentre outros inúmeros exemplos que poderiam ser citados, porém, que espelha a identidade do estúdio em aprimorar aquilo que se encontra desgastado. Kill la Kill utiliza um conjunto dessas nuances ao longo da série que permitem a construção de um diferencial.

__Caracterização e Desenvolvimento de Personagem__
Personagens enraizados em formulações convencionais e padrões da Gainax preenchem todo o *cast* do anime. Maniqueismo, unidimensionalidade, comportamentos previsíveis e arquétipos de ação e henshin todos esses podem ser encontrados aqui. Tal como, em seus desenvolvimentos, nada que fuja notoriamente das fórmulas convencionais.
Entretanto, o maior problema se localiza no fato de seus desenvolvimentos andarem em círculos até que possam prosseguir. Continuamente as personagens retornam a comportamentos ou problematizações já trespassados, para que apenas na reta final do anime eles sejam finalizados.

__Humor__
Opera majoritariamente através de um surrealismo caricato, fazendo uso de técnicas de *deranged animation*. Não obstante, também traz abordagens de humor físico em esdrúxulas movimentações das personagens e expressões grotescas.
Quanto a execução em si, de maneira perspicaz o anime explora sua temática excêntrica para conduzir as *punch lines*, tornando-as ainda mais inusitadas, e assim intensificando o fator base de sua estrutura cômica (a subversão da expectativa do público). Faz bom uso de seu frenético ritmo para conduzir a comédia, sem denigrir o *timing*. De mesmo modo, consegue se colocar adequadamente dentro da narrativa para quebre-la ou incrementa-la quando necessário.

__Reflexão__
A reflexão traz uma intrínseca dinâmica com o *world build* por meio do conceito do que são roupas e o que é a ausência delas. Inúmeros diálogos e analogias reflexivas ao decorrer dos episódios, unidas de extensões de definições do *world build* (como, a tesoura, os fios de vida e os nudistas) apoiam a grande estrutura que sustenta esse laço, fazendo-na ir além do simples ativismo/objetivação que abandona seu primor.

__Moralidade Antiquada__
Indo contra o ideal da obra de refinar clichês, nem todas as reflexões demonstram-se bem elaboradas, porções de vezes lições antiquadas sobre amizade e força de vontade surgem nas conversações apenas para prejudicá-las.

__Conclusão__
Kill la Kill eleva o *Gainax Style* a seu auge. Trabalha com o genérico, refina-o e vai adiante de suas barreiras temporais. 
Demonstra-se um destaque em seu gêneros narrativos, de mesma forma que, quando contextualizado a sua época, prova-se igualmente notório em suas abordagens.
À parte de seus bobos tropeços, é, com certeza, um grande passo para um estúdio promissor.

Are you interested in a story about a high school girl who transfers to a new school and is immediately at odds with the popular student council president?

How about an intense, action packed show that feels absolutely awesome to watch? One where the main character fights increasingly powerful bosses, getting stronger along the way in anticipation of defeating the final villain?

What about a heartfelt tale of a girl seeking to find the truth about her father's mysterious death, with a dramatic plot that will sometimes shock you and other times bring you to tears?

Or are you the type that enjoys a good magical girl show, complete with flashy transformation sequences and obvious fan service?

Why do I ask? Because _Kill la Kill_ is all four of those things. This show, in my opinion, is the gold standard of Studio Trigger content. It's intense, it's awesome, it doesn't pull any punches.

This show is ridiculous, and it embraces its ridiculousness. You can see this at the start of the show, where characters, places, and actions are all blown way out of proportion. When Gamagori barges into the classroom, he towers over all the students, clearly showing his authority. When the opening sequence ends and the camera pans out to the city, Honnouji Academy is ridiculously exaggerated in size compared to its surroundings. You can often spot minute things that don't make sense, such as characters who turn 2D while turning around or Mako pulling out a huge lunch box from under her uniform. _Kill la Kill_ does not concern itself with following reality, it simply does whatever is the most awesome.

Animation isn't all that this show's got. The story is also phenomenal, and it's both satisfying and unexpected to see all the pieces slowly come together to reach the climax. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but I do want to say that the story was much deeper and more well thought-out than I had expected. Having such an intense story also increases the appeal of the animation. When you start to connect with the characters and their motivations, each time they transform, it just feels so much more powerful.

I would say the one single weakness in this show is its comedy. I like the character Mako and she's an important part of the story, but when it comes to humor, she rarely if ever hits the mark. Sometimes it also just feels completely out of place. What the heck is she even doing when she's under that Hallelujah spotlight? Same with Mikisugi. Just because you are fighting against the tyranny of the clothing does not mean you need to strip sensually at every opportunity.

Overall, this is a very well-made show, a shining example of Studio Trigger's vast creative potential. As a whole, it's not like any other show I've seen before, but it's not hard to draw parallels between _Kill la Kill_ and Trigger's other hit anime, _Darling in the Franxx_. The two have similar vibes, but Kill la Kill is even more awesome and absurd, and most importantly, it doesn't wait until the last five episodes to introduce the aliens. :)

If you're in for a wild ride, _Kill la Kill_ is one helluva ride.

Intense, action packed, heartfelt, and absurdist story that is imperfect but awesome.

Kill la Kill was one of those shows that required your full attention but managed to never be exhausting or boring. To put it bluntly: Kill la Kill is an incredible show. Despite there being so many things that make the show great, the greatness of the show couldn't carry the show all the way to perfection. 


__What Make The Show Great:__

There are so many things in this show that almost perfectly fit together. To be more specific: the animation, the characters, and the plot. 

__~~~The Animation:~~~

 The animation is almost always a spectacle. Most of the scenes in the show are over the top crazy with bodies, blades, and blood flying everywhere. With Kill la Kill there's always something to enjoy looking at. Whether it be the unique and beautiful character designs or the goose-bump-giving fight scenes.





~~~__The Characters:__~~~

The cast of characters consist of diverse, unique, and fun characters. All of the characters in this show have their own distinct personalities and physical traits. Often times with large casts of extremely unique characters, it can become a challenge to keep up with all of them as they all play their own role in the cast. With Kill la Kill the show does the work for you by keeping the main characters in the spotlight, while keeping the supporting characters in the background. Even with keeping a strong balance between main and supporting characters, every character manages to bring an entertaining personality to the table despite what role they play in the story.

Throughout the entirety of the show, the plot is always driving forward at full speed. This makes for a story that sucks you in and keeps you in. There's never a lacking of developments of plot and character and that nonstop high action road the show takes you down proves to be entertaining as hell. 

__What Kept The Show From Perfection:__

Despite the good elements of the show significantly outweighing the bad elements, there are still bad elements that proved to be problems throughout the show. Ironically enough those elements stem from the same elements that made the show great. Those elements being: The animation, the characters, and the plot.

__~~~The Animation~~~__

As I had said earlier, there is never a shortage of things to look at in this show. Despite that, there is sometimes too much to have to look at. There are moments where there is so much stuff happening in the show at the same time, where it becomes a struggle to take and comprehend everything that is happening. There will be frames where there will be a new character being introduced, a lot of large movements, and large Japanese letters taking up the majority of the frame. Most of the time it's not hard to see and understand what's going on, but there are still those moments that keep it from being completely easy. 

__~~~The Characters:~~~__

When having such a large and diverse cast of characters, there are times when certain characters don't fit with the tone of the scene or arc. This produces moments where the tone and feeling of a scene or arc just suddenly and abruptly changes like a song changing key every 30 seconds. 

__~~~The Plot:~~~__

Truth be told, my complaint about the plot is a very minor one but semi-spoils the show. (Read at your own risk.) ~!The rising action of the plot hinges on devaluing everything that happened before that. I wouldn't really have a problem with this if it didn't throw so many good arcs and scenes out the window. Overall though, it was an easy thing to overlook given all of the great things the plot gave.!~

__Should You Watch The Show?:__

ABSOLUTELY! There are so many things that this show does well, that it makes it an incredible experience to watch. This isn't a show anyone should miss out on, because not only is it one of a kind, but its one of a great kind. I give it an 87/100.

Eu amo todos os personagens de Kill la Kill, todos eles são carismáticos para um dedéu, muito divertidos e criativos, são sensacionais.

Como eu amo essa personagem, como ela é incrível, aqueles discursos, as piadas, as reações, tudo é muito, mas muito legal de se assistir.

Ponto especial:

Uma coisa que eu gostaria de ressaltar é a quantidade de anime que se utilizasse esse rule of cool como base para executar sua história ficaria muito melhor, por exemplo...

Nanatsu no taizai e JoJo, (eu sei que JoJo tem sua importância para a indústria de anime num geral e tals, mas não muda o fato de que seria muito mais agradável se fosse um monte de homem marombado sem sentido se socando... mas ok)
Se Nanatsu no taizai realmente se preocupasse mais com diversão, seria muito mais legal de se assistir, pena que não é assim...

A quantidade de obras legais que iriam surgir de universos completamente genéricos, é surreal. Obviamente nem todos os animes seriam bons e tals, mas melhores que seus originais eu realmente acho que seriam.
Ainda vou ver Gurren Laggan e Promare, que também são nesse estilo mais rushado de fazer as coisas, são todas obras do mesmo autor.

Ecchi:

Antes que me questionem de como eu gostei de Kill la Kill sendo que tem tanto ecchi, vou explicar...
O que eu não gosto, é anime que utiliza do ecchi voltado ao sexual sendo que o anime em si não vai realizar nada para esse lado. Não gosto de obras que perdem tempo com isso.
Kill la Kill tem ecchi pra cacete, sim. Porém é um ecchi escrashado, igual o resto do anime inteiro, não sei vocês, mas eu não fico com tesão numa calcinha aparecendo no meio de uma luta sem sentido com explosão e umas roupas bizarras... por conta disso eu consegui ignorar muito bem esse ecchi exagerado que o anime tem.
Entendo uma nota mais baixa caso o ecchi tenha te incomodado, mas não foi um problema pra mim.
Até porque o anime literalmente não perde tempo pra executar ecchi, o anime não perde tempo com nada, tem uma luta frenética acontecendo, toma um ecchi aí, foda-se. Não é algo que faz um puta de um trajeto só pra executar ecchi, isso que eu adoro em Kill la Kill.

Design:

Kill la Kill tem o melhor tipo de design possível para executar sua proposta é simples e funcional, sem muitos detalhes e sempre com animação muito rápida, isso da um toque tão especial, é muito importante para a originalidade do animes.

Resumindo:

Era basicamente isso que eu queria falar sobre Kill la Kill, recomendo a todos esse anime maravilhoso. Ótimo para introduzir alguém ao mundo do rule of cool e extremamente divertido de se assistir.

Um anime incrível para te apresentar o mundo do "Rule of Cool"

As self-absorbed as I may come off, I am aware of the baggage that ‘Kill la Kill’ is bound to draw in, its ‘expression’ is certainly not a subtlety. Though the function of this fan-service is often to distract its audience, asexual as I am, rarely causes anything more than a vacuum of thought. That is unless the creators become too confident in this technique and the lack of a substance becomes more distracting than any pair of tits, or the creators expect me to be distracted by middle-school students, in which I become deeply afraid as to how I came to find the animation. And despite the main character’s suspiciously minor age, the former exception is more relevant to this analysis. Or I should say, the substance lies in its overuse of fan-service, funnily enough.

Spoilers ahead

Having polished their presentation to its highest point, in my opinion, the Imaishi team at Gainax couldn’t have premiered their new animation studio more fittingly. With just half a scissor to wield, Ryuuko Matoi enters Honno city to find the perpetrator of her father’s murder, and when the student council president of the fascistic academy running the town suggests they know of the incident, Ryuuko becomes suspicious that they might be the holder of the second scissor in the pair that used to belong to her father. And it is through its incredibly stylized and expressive style that the intense and tongue-in-cheek tone is able to feel like a cohesive whole like I don’t think many other creators could’ve achieved. When a giant breaks open the door to a classroom in the opening scene to episode 1, literally flinging it through the window on the other side of the homeroom before towering over the teacher asking for a student that has revealed themself to be a rebel of the academy, you know exactly what this series is about to throw at you.

The production, from the grande animation and musical set pieces to the small but influential edits and sound effects, work to portray the immense tension you are put through, as well as the cartoony moments, the series being as much a comedy as an action drama. The blend of these elements works surprisingly well, often depicting its tense scenes equally light-heartedly as the explicitly comedic ones, which you would expect to trivialize the threat but instead creates an exciting vibe and an even bigger tension when shit really hits the fan. This all comes together to help the narrative's inherent amusement, almost looking like a parody of anime centered around high school, but ironically never becomes a laughingstock because the presentation never forces you to take it seriously, which then lets you more naturally treat the story as a serious threat. I was rarely reminded of its absurdity in a negative sense, and in this way, I think the audiovisual elements of the show, and the narrative, make a cohesive whole.

But to bring it back to the series’ use of fan-service, even here, I think the visual presentation really helps to hinder the sexual undertones to go in an inappropriate direction. Although shocking at first, the exaggerated tone helps even the most excessive scenes feel in line with the series, and, in comparison to something like ‘Fire force’, is much easier to get used to. And although there are scenes wherein this is kind of ruined, especially when Ryuuko is sexually harassed by her family for what must’ve been the fifth time, I also believe the imagery to be a good contributor to the series’ commentary on fascism and freedom.

Although the series clearly doesn’t present itself as political theory, much like the tower of The Lighthouse, Kill la Kill’s use of symbolism as a form of power is incredibly intriguing from a political perspective. Satsuki is quickly presented as a fascist dictator, which is funny since they’re a student council president, but what I find more interesting is how this ideology is represented through the character’s view of expression and the commodity of power she wields. Clothing already existing as a class structure in the universe, the way in which it is distributed unfairly, often giving exceptions to those close to her where she would disown those beneath her. And in this way, the sexual presentation of the series serves as an opposition to the inequality and lack of freedom under fascism, where no one can perform superiority in their nude body. And although this symbolism can get tied up in some visually and narratively derivative action scenes; and repetitive interpersonal drama between Ryuko and Senketsu, the way in which this symbolism never gets a true conclusion until everything has been packed makes the story of ‘Kill la Kill’ especially engaging, as you’re always on the look-out for details that might change the implications of the story.

___SPOILERS BEWARE!___

So, Kill la Kill is going to be a pretty interesting review as I picked up this show knowing nothing but the name and well this was certainly one of the most unique and original shows I’ve seen if not the most original. Nowhere else in my 3 years of watching anime did I come across an anime where nudity means power, Kill la Kill is centered around a high school where students are divided by class by the Ultima Uniforms they wear which are essentially school uniforms that grant supernatural powers ranging from 0 to 3 stars. Our MC Ryuuko is a transfer student who is just transferring to this school and already in the very first episode she goes up against a student wearing a 2 star uniform, to no surprise she gets defeated and manages to escape, later on she manages to find a black sailor uniform which is made up of 100% life fibres meaning the piece of cloth is a real entity but it needs to drink human blood to awaken. Once the sailor uniform Senketsu awakens it clings onto Ryuuko body as it wants to be worn and well…this is a pretty lewd outfit which definitely caught me off guard at first. That’s pretty much a summary of just the very first episode and the pacing it goes at is off the roof, so much happens in these 22 mins that already in the very first episode I stopped trying to comprehend it and simply accepted it. Oh, I should mention that Ryuuko’s goal is to find out who murdered her father who she believes the culprit is Satsuki Kiryuuin who is also the student president of this high school that Ryuuko just transferred to.

Over the course of the next few episodes we see Ryuuko getting stronger as she battles many kinds of presidents from various clubs and in one of the episodes the anime introduces me to originality because in order to draw out the full power of a Godrobe like Senketsu the wearer needs to be completely nude while synchronising with the outfit and this idea right here is something I’ve never EVER seen before. Wearing clothes that are real life entities of their own and wearing nothing but the lewd outfit brings out more power since the Godrobe has to consume less blood in order to satisfy itself. This idea is ridiculous but I love it since its incredibly creative and well like I mentioned its lewd so that’s a plus from me too ***wink***. So, from now on whenever Ryuuko needed something done she would just synchronise with her outfit to bring out a substantial power increase all while looking incredibly hot, sexy, and totally badass. This anime’s idea and originality really appealed to me and I became a fan of this show easily.

I already spoke of the originality in this anime from how the weapons work but I also did mention how incredibly fast paced the first episode was. I would say the first 7 or 8 episodes are stupidly fast faced and so chaotic with the amount of shit happening that I started appreciating this show for its ridiculousness rather than questioning why it was done and this was the correct choice since trying to understand Kill la Kill on the surface to a normal viewer won’t make sense, I found it best to experience what’s thrown at you and just accept its beauty gracefully since this show is so wacky and plain dumb which is what makes it so good. It crosses that line of going so over the top where it starts becoming amazing. Once these first few fast paced episodes are over we reach the point in the anime where Ryuuko has to take on the four Devas in order to have a chance at fighting Satsuki and from this point onwards I would say the main plot of the show slowly starts taking shape, we move away from the ridiculousness and comedic side of the anime and slowly but surely move into the more serious aspect of the show and even have some kind of meaningful story. If I haven’t mentioned it yet then I will say it now but the story seems so simple on the surface, just a kid looking to avenge her father’s dead, seems pretty simple right? You could not be more wrong as this anime goes so much deeper and what an incredible ride this was for me. There was no point in the show where I felt bored as everything was either fast paced, straight up stupid which makes you laugh or genuine story progression which got me very immersed.

I want to make a brief note on the greatest recap episode I witnessed. I’m not exactly sure which episode it was but at first the viewer is made to believe that they will be watching a recap episode but then Senketsu blitzes the story up to this point in 90 seconds and I was in so much shock at first which eventually lead to a smile as its just another example of what makes this anime great, another great memorable moment as this recap episode went by so fast that its just too good to forget.

Speaking of memorable moments, Satsuki betraying her mother was something I totally didn’t see coming and when I saw Ragyou get stabbed I just needed to know who did it but not even for a moment did it cross my mind that Satsuki was the one who did it, and if that wasn’t enough of a plot twist then at the end of the same episode it is revealed that Ryuuko is Ragyou’s daughter and simultaneously Satsuki’s sister. I’m sorry what!!! Another incredible anime plot twist and this was the cliffhanger of an episode which I can imagine people back in 2013 who watched this couldn’t wait to find out what happens in the next episode as I for sure was. Just to give you an idea of what kind of monster Ragyou is, earlier I mentioned that a Godrobe is a piece of cloth that is fused with 100% life fibres well that’s essentially what Ragyou is, she basically turned herself into a monster that looks like human but is made up of fabric on the inside meaning its an incredibly hard entity to get rid of since it has regenerative fibres which can heal back any loss of limbs and alike. That’s probably enough on the plot and its twists but as you can tell I was truly fascinated by it all and loved it all the way from the beginning to the end throughout as it was truly one fricking kind of ride.

So the music in Kill la Kill is simply put “Godlike”, considering I didn’t really know what kind of anime I was getting myself into when picking up Kill la Kill, the soundtrack that I experienced throughout has got to be some of the greatest anime OST I’ve ever set my ears on. There are a few incredibly memorable tracks which will stick with me for a good while. First “Blumenkranz” which is the theme of the main villain of the anime Ragyou Kiryuuin. This theme is outstanding and played anywhere there was even a slight mention of Ragyou, it’s a song which captivates her twisted personality incredibly well to the point it gives me goosebumps listening to it now. Probably the most memorable song in the entire anime. Another song which we are introduced to straight away in episode 1 is “Don’t Lose Your Way” which I would say is Ryuuko’s main theme as it seems to be play in times when the tide of the battle was changing or when something badass was going to happen involving Ryuuko. Another song which I absolutely love from this series and everytime it started playing I knew some crazy shit was about to go down and most of the time it did. These two mentioned songs are the OST which stood out to me outside the OP/ED’s of course. These two songs are so damn amazing and totally badass fitting two totally different characters. I love both of these. Both OP’s are great, both ED’s are great too. The OST that went into this show is a masterpiece as its easily some of the greatest anime OST I’ve ever heard.

I haven’t even touched on the characters yet but I already rambled on enough so let me close this review. As mentioned in my first paragraph, this was the most unique show I’ve seen in a long time if ever because the idea of nudity meaning power is simply groundbreaking to me. There are so many scenes where there is nudity present and if not completely nude then the outfits are partially nude only covering the most sensitive parts, and I have to accept the reality that this anime was probably aired on TV’s in 2013 for people to watch which is a bit hard to believe but hey I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this masterpiece. A show about nudity and wearing clothes to gain supernatural abilities is probably the last thing I was expecting when picking up a show called “Kill la Kill” but man was it a beauty to behold. I will say this now since its important, if you’re not a fan of ecchi and nudity in anime then this show won’t be enjoyable but if look past that aspect then this show is simply fantastic and it even has some emotional moments goddamit. Who would have thought parting with a sailor uniform could have been so damn emotional! In fact, the nudity of the show is just a bonus to those who enjoy it as the plot in itself was very well written which I enjoyed to the fullest. Since I didn’t mention characters to not lengthen this out, let me say it now before I conclude but the secret organisation that the undercover teacher is a part of has got to the greatest and most innovative organisation I’ve ever seen. Their robots require you to be nude to operate them and have your ass sticking out while wearing them like WHERE DO YOU EVER SEE THIS ANYWHERE ELSE. I know its anime but even for anime standards this show was definitely something off the charts which I never experienced before and truly one kind of a ride. Last thing to finish this anime off is summarising this show in a short sentence would be “being totally badass while completely nude!” as the fights are plenty and all are nude and totally badass haha. Highly recommend checking out Kill la Kill as its one hell of a unique experience.

Kill la Kill é um anime original, de 24 episódios, produzido pelo estúdio Trigger e que começou a ser exibido no ano de 2013 no Japão. É o primeiro projeto para televisão do estúdio criado por Hiroyuki Imaishi e Masahiko Ohtsuka, ambos ex-funcionários da Gainax (Evangelion) e que estiveram envolvidos na produção do anime Tengen Toppa Guren Lagann.

Minha opinião:
Kill la Kill é um anime tão interessante e com um plot tão convidativo que mesmo o pessoal que vem só pelo fanservice acaba ficando pela história. Dirigida por Hiroyuki Imaishi e escrita por Kazuki Nakashima, a história de vingança e superação de Ryuko Matoi é explosiva, cheia de adrenalina e muito alívio cômico, não de maneira forçada ou fora de lugar. Tudo acaba sendo muito natural e as personagens não parecem mal inseridas em nenhum momento, mesmo em seus exageros.
Vale resaltar que cada personagem que aparece tem sua devida personalidade e função no anime. Temos a personagem principal Ryuuko, com sua roupa falante Senketsu, da qual apenas ela é capaz de conversar. Temos a famosa Mako, grande aliado da protagonista, e a sua família super carismática, principalmente sua mamãe que sempre faz empanado de "coisas estranhas encontradas por aí". E vários outros personagens que vão tendo seu desenvolvimento ganhando importance na obra

Conclusão:
Kill la Kill é um anime cheio de humor. Seus toques especiais começam com a animação diferente, as cores e imagens que formam o fundo. Ele contém várias cenas constrangedoras e, apesar de ser meio estranho no começo, elas logo se tornam engraçadas. Tudo isso seria mais bem aproveitado se a história fosse um pouco mais longa, mas Kill la Kill sem dúvidas tem seu valor.
Um ótimo anime, tem uma história curta, tem os seus ecchis, e uma comédia impecável. Seus personagens são únicos e extremamente cativante. Tem um ultra plost twist, a forma de apresentação da história tem um ritmo um pouco intenso, mas faz parte de seu estilo, muito bom. Daria 10 se não tivesse os ecchis e uma história mais longa!

Kill la Kill is a transformation fighter anime based around Ryuko Matoi, a 17-year-old girl in search of her father's killer. With her only clue being half of his invention, the Scissor Blade (and knowing that the killer has the other half), and later also the sentient uniform Senketsu*, Ryuko arrives at Honnouji Academy, an academy run by an absurdly powerful student council led by Satsuki Kiryuin. Honnouji Academy rules over the region as a totalitarian dictatorship, and Satsuki hands out Goku uniforms to her most loyal students, giving them superhuman abilities.

So, just from the above, we can establish that the basic premise of Kill la Kill is pretty good. It might not be the most original one out there, but it is certainly versatile enough to be taken in a large number of diferent interesting ways. Fortunately, Kill la Kill doesn't disappoint in that front.

Kill la Kill is a total World of Ham. In over half of the episodes there are more shouted lines than spoken ones. Characters (no matter how wimpy!), locations, weapons, and even important plot points are introduced (sometimes multiple times) with big red letters that cover the entire screen. Character traits are exaggerated to comedic (and memetic) levels - special shoutout to Ryuko's friend Mako Mankanshoku, whose ridiculous genki girl cloudcuckoolander antics provide some nice comic relief. Protagonists and antagonists both call their signature attacks with extreme confidence. Random background extras are slaughtered in the hundreds. Explosions, explosions everywhere. The plot rushes ahead at full speed, especially at the beginning.

While this usually wouldn't make for good anime, Kill la Kill manages to make it work by playing the formula to its strengths and blatantly parodying its weaknesses. The combat is enhanced by fluid animation and well-executed choreography. The camera work is excellent throughout the 24 episodes as well.

Where Kill la Kill really starts showing its brilliance is in its ability to play anime tropes either straight or blatantly parodying and affectionaly mocking them. In a way, it's a celebration of its predecessors. By itself, Kill la Kill is already parodies the ecchi genre, with its rampant fanservice (and fan disservice) and numerous panty shots, all without an excuse plot. It's also a reconstruction of the magical girl genre, having dark overtones but overall centering on just celebrating the whole thing. Where they appear (often), expect stereotypical anime situations or character profiles to be taken either in a comically serious manner or some character (usually Ryuko herself) openly point out its nonsense. 
~!Special shoutout to episode 4, which seems to exist only to parody as many anime tropes as possible, and might very well be my favorite of the 24.!~
Also, there are a ton of small easter eggs, shoutouts and hidden references to other works.

Kill la Kill is one of those anime where towards the ending the plot has pretty much changed everything completely. By the second half, it is throwing one plot twist after another, and the show turns darker as the stakes are ramped up. Unfortunately, Kill la Kill can falter a bit here, for a few reasons. One, it suddenly takes itself far more seriously, eliminating most of its smart comedic tone. For another, fights begin to mostly involve the main characters, all of which also have somewhat similar weapons, in contrast to the amusingly ridiculous styles of combat that some side characters displayed in the first half.

That's not to say that Kill la Kill becomes unwatchable or that it has an unsatisfying conclusion. Even at its weakest points, Kill la Kill is still a good watch and continues to show signs of immediate brilliance (washing out the color palette on its bleakest scenes) and is, in fact, silently building up towards its ending. Through sheer over-the-top (of course) anime epicness on one hand, and full use of Chekhov's gun on the other hand, Kill la Kill picks up again in its most final episodes, once more showcasing its smart brilliance and delivering a good ending to wrap the show up.

Fundamentally, Kill la Kill is a coming of age story about the power of friendship, with substantial (though perhaps predictable) character development. It also seems to throw around a number of philosophical questions about the relationship between humans and clothing (a central theme). It's not immediately obvious what Kill la Kill is doing here, even leaving me with the impression that it was largely failing to make a grand statement on the topic at first (not that an anime like Kill la Kill even needs to do so). But, the more you analyze it, the more you realize that Kill la Kill is actually bringing out some interesting points and providing its own answers. ~!Namely, for example, that clothing does not make the man.!~

Oh, and Kill la Kill literally begins by explicitly mentioning the Nazis for apparently no reason, so it gets an extra point (out of a 100). ~!This reference to Nazism can be interpreted as an obscure reference to another of its central themes - oppression.!~

Veredict: 81/100. Dumb fun at times, impressively smart at others, Kill la Kill showcases the full potential of the finely refined art of Ham.

On the one hand it's often intrusive and detracts from the literary quality of the work when used improperly, but on the other, weebs are fucking horny, dammit. Egad, what a dilemma! This idiotic trope forms the backbone of one of the most creative anime under the sun. I'm talking, of course, about this one!~~~

~~~Without giving too much away, _Kill la Kill_ is a parody to end all parodies; a deconstruction of just about every anime trope in the books. As such, the themes go hand in hand with just about everything else, which makes it difficult to talk about without spoiling it. In vague terms, this is a story about being free of the mental shackles society places on us, as it expects us to conform to its whims. A story about allowing one's _self_ to shine through even amidst a world that tells you not to. More than that, however, is the obvious calling out of the anime medium and it's predictable, repetitive, and downright ridiculous tendencies. The characters are in high school, because of course they are. The women (and in this case, men too) are barely clothed, because of course they are. The main character wins every fight with a nonsensical deus-ex-machina, because of course they do. Except, in _Kill la Kill_, every single one of these things is part of the self-aware joke. This makes it difficult to criticize; because it's pretty easy to write off pretty much any perceived flaw as... a part of the satire.~~~

~~~It's a good thing, then, that of all studios, TRIGGER was the one to tackle the idea. These people already proved with _Gurren Lagann_ that they can make you cry over downright ridiculous things, 6 years before this anime aired. This anime has a wonderful ability to give the most asinine things meaning; I'd even say that it does a better job at this than _Gurren Lagann_ did. The emotional core may not be quite as strong but the thematic purpose is infinitely more daunting and ambitious- and it delivers on this front spectacularly, with some of the most clever metaphorical storytelling I have ever seen. The plot itself isn't half bad either, featuring some excellent twists and turns that keep things fresh. The animation budget is obviously nowhere near as bombastic as it was 6 years ago, but TRIGGER's DNA still bleeds through the seams and delivers the goods in terms of personality. Where the animation itself lacks a bit, the direction and cinematography more than picks up the slack. And of course, the iconic soundtrack goes a long way towards making this show memorable. Where _Gurren Lagann_ embraced the corniness, _Kill la Kill_'s soundtrack treats the show's absurd subject matter with an uncharacteristic grandeur that makes it extremely easy to be sucked into the story's pace, despite the absurdity of it all. The more you watch, the more you understand. And the more you understand, the less absurd it all is. By the halfway point, you won't care that everyone is half naked anymore.~~~

~~~Of course, this is still an action show. The action itself is pretty typical action anime fare, both for better and for worse. Talking is a free action, you know! Just as with everything else in this show though, I find myself more engaged by the thematic purpose behind it than the content itself. If you were to look at a fight from this anime in a vacuum, you'd have no idea what makes it good- because the choreography includes just about every dumb "anime" thing in the books. From deus-ex-machinas to flow interrupting dialogue to flashy finishing moves with more style than practical application. This is where the quality of Kill la Kill may be lost on those who simply want a flashy show to turn their brain off to. It's not perfect, either. The antagonist is a caricature, which, again, could in and of itself be a part of the satire, but who's to say. I felt that there was also a bit of missed potential in Ryuuko's character, seeing as there are multiple attempts to give her some depth later in the series, but they are too subtle to really tie her character into the themes of the show all too much. But again, part of the satire; she do be a shonen protagonist alright. See what I mean?~~~

__Conclusion__
~~~While I love a lot of aspects of _Kill la Kill_, the sheer fun factor and thematic depth completely steal the show. This show is both a diss track to the entire medium of anime and something that _only works_ as an anime. Something with an immense amount of moving parts detached from the gears in the author's head to thoroughly explore a concept by means of storytelling that somehow manages to also be a fast paced, entertaining, and emotional work of fiction that constantly one-ups itself. It's such a raw expression of creativity that I cannot help but adore it. There will never be another anime like this one.~~~

Back when Kill la Kill first released, pictures of half naked Ryuko circled the internet and I thought that I'd never watch this series because of just how horny it looked.  Eight years later, after watching the incredible SSSS.GRIDMAN, I decided to give some love to Studio Trigger’s other works; mainly the black bird I thought I’d never watch, and arguably their most famous anime: Kill la Kill.  From the outset, I knew I was in for a trip, but I had no idea how batshit crazy that trip would be.  The story of a high school governed by people with clothing that gives them superpowers that morphs into essentially a war against alien clothing is a hilariously ridiculous premise that the show wholeheartedly takes seriously, and is absolutely incredible because of it.  For how wacky the story is, the show does an excellent job with it’s worldbuilding without slowing the lightning fast pacing of the show.  It’s also one of the funniest anime I've watched with some hilarious dialogue and visual comedy.  The characters of Kill la Kill are unique and memorable in their own way.  Ryuko ranks amongst some of my favorite protagonists.  Mako is one precious cinnamon roll who bounces off Ryuko perfectly.  Satsuki is at once a brilliant antagonist to Ryuko, but becomes an equally brilliant deuteragonist.  The rest of the student council are great characters, but the standout is obviously Gamagoori, in no small part because of his absolutely adorable relationship with Mako.  And I never thought I'd feel for a piece of clothing, but Senketsu has proven me wrong.  You can’t talk about Kill la Kill or really any Studio Trigger works without mentioning the beautiful and insane style of the show.  It’s jagged and rough yet butter smooth and incredibly pretty.  The colors pop and the style helps amplify it’s already hilarious visual comedy.  The animation for Kill la Kill is second to none.  Like the style of most other Studio Trigger works, the a3nimation is slick and smooth, and one of the best features of the show.  What surprised me most about the show, however, was the stellar music.  Tracks are intense, emotional, and downright gorgeous most of the time.  The voice actors are also doing an amazing job juggling the dramatic scenes with the comedic, with Ryuko’s va being an absolute standout.  Ecchi anime are usually not my cup of tea even when I want to watch something horny and stupid, but Kill la Kill does it’s fanservice in some of the most tasteful ways I’ve ever seen.  For every scene with half-naked girls, there is a scene with half-naked dude as well, which I totally respect.  Kill la Kill was some of the most fun I’ve had watching an anime in a long time.  If you can accept the show for what it is with it’s over-the-top premise, lightning fast pacing, tons of fanservice, and balls to the wall ridiculousness, then you will have one hell of a time with Kill la Kill.

If you can accept the show for what it is, then you will have one hell of a time with Kill la Kill.

This show feels like something our tiger boi Scott Henson would enjoy.

After falling in love with Gurren Lagann, while I was more than satisfied with that motivational trek of a lifetime, hearing that this was made by the same duo of Hiroyuki Imaishi & Kazuki Nakashima piqued my interest. By the end, while I do prefer Gurren Lagann and love its progression into loud and proud growth more, Kill la Kill still more than delivers the goods of being a fun, memorable, trigger happy (pun semi intended) "fuck you let's smash up some shit!" action show with a silly but so damn kickass premise.

Though just to get it out of the way: we's gotta talk 'bout fanservice. And unsurprisingly I find it a double-edged sword. Anime being anime, you have to at least stomach the unapologetic boobs, butts, and smut thrown in because those darn Japanese are beautiful horny bastards. And well, not everything can be an EVA in terms of actually using sex as a meaningful and thoughtful theme that serves the story and messages. Not to say Kill la Kill is ALL gratuitous fanservice with no real reason for existing in the context of the story, but it is mostly for me. Maybe with a good rewatch I might find more depth to the fanservice. Some interesting themes that didn't get lost on me involved the true bliss and confidence to be found in nudity once you're willing to embrace it. Or how clothing is protective, yet restrictive, further strengthening the raw energy and empowerment of being naked. Though by the end, as Ryuko proclaims, "humans are humans and clothes are clothes." Pretty straightforward, but the bravado and sincerity actually makes you want to go out and appreciate staying pure (nude) but still respect the comfort of some nice clothing. Especially if Ryuko and Senketsu's genuinely endearing friendship is anything to go by. There's no denying they're more than aware of the brash nudity and what messages they could draw out of it. But as is, it's mostly horny animators being horny animators and giving the pubescent teens their first taste of real, no-tease cheesecake. Like, did we REALLY need the male Mankanshokus constantly peeping at Ryuko besides for the comedy? Add to it the fact I'm a year away from hitting 20, and for the sake of decency and growth, I want to cut back or at least be more responsible about whatever sensual media I consume especially considering they're mostly teenagers. Again, while I do feel it's important to note that we'd all unapolagetically gush and lose our horny minds to these characters when WE were teens, since by and large, that seems to be the demographic, as you grow older, it's best to take it all more sensibly and responsibly. I love some good ol' p**n as much as the next guy, but I'd be more than happy to give up those thoughts for a while. There's more to life than getting your turtle hard or your slit wet. That's my spiel. 

Anyways, character-wise, I practically fall head over heels in love whenever Senketsu and Mako show up on screen. The latter and her family easily being the funniest, and they did a fantastic job at bringing levity to the cold, crushing scenes. It impressively never comes off as a tone-killer, partly since this show embraces the raging, colorful fury of its world, batshit action, and ridiculously over-the-top stakes to the point of endearment. So naturally, the humor follows suit (though more so in the early episodes) with constant in-the-background gags from stray dogs humping to a mom just casually about to shoot shit up while breastfeeding. Ryuko is a stellar MC, each of the elites have their own memorable quirks, and goddammit, Nui Hareme is straight up TERRIFYING. There's something about the "cute as punch but downright demented" character trope that works perfectly for her. 

Story-wise, it knows how to keep you itching to watch the next episode. The 2nd half of the show being a distinct change of context and story than what we were led to believe, culminating by going into space for the big finale. Again, this makes for an engaging watch, and you get more than enough time to see Senketsu and Mako warm Ryuko's short-fuse heart up. The more it builds the more it makes that credits payoff all the more satisfying. Though while it works from already having amped up stakes from the start, the trade-off is it doesn't make the final showdowns aaaaassss groundbreaking as it could've. But only by the slimmest of margins. There's still a plethora of jaw-dropping twists, and the story undeniably has you by the ear as you step back in awe at how it all clocks back together tightly in hindsight. The depth behind the characters as everything unfolds becomes all the more compelling.

For some downsides however, while a character like Satsuki really impressed me over time, in fact I'll go so far as to call her _the_ most compelling, especially looking at her relationship with her mother... ~!I really wanted her turn to the light side to be given more time. Outside of "the enemy of my enemy is now my friend (and sister)," I never truly bought into her and especially the elite four as being the ones we have to automatically root with after episode 18's big truth bomb. Most of that heavy lifting is done in one scene in ep. 22, and while it's very well-made, it's still only one scene. The transition of being stuck in a cartoonishly fascist high school to world domination antics isn't jarring, but it asks a lot of the viewer in the moment of truth that these guys are on the same side, despite the entire first half treating them as ruthless, hierarchical douchey privileged kids with too much time and money. !~

I also think it didn't handle the ridiculousness angle as well. There's no doubt as you watch it that even the creators are more than aware of the absurd nature. The entire plot can be summed up in the gloriously simple "trying to stop evil clothing with the power of skimpy outfits," but it occasionally did make me smirk, in a very "pffff, yeah sure alright" manner. Whereas a show like Gurren Lagann perfected the art of simplicity while still keeping an engaging plot and backstory you could look back and appreciate once you've finished. It had its iconic peak, bonkers space finale showdown that hinged and benefited from its unapologetic ante-upping and mantra of "screw the logic. screw the math. Just take the risk and drill through it!" KLK opts for that too, but you're still having to keep up with all the various plot points as the big action setpieces happen. But hey, the worst you could do is wuss out and not have fun or commit to the absurdity, which KLK certainly doesn't. 

Those fight scenes still blow the roof off with the body horror and seething rage you get out of Ryuko & Satsuki. Well-defined color schemes of black & bloody red and white & blue compliment the two well, respectively. The animation in general has a very "clean" look to it, the score rendition of "Don't lose your way" I feel is better than the actual song (also still really great), and on a purely presentational level-it undeniably hits all the right spots. A cinematic rush of uniform duels and high-tech. And the final few episodes still leave you with the spirit of an emotional and inspirational "fuck yeah!" With shows like these, I practically feel like running a marathon with how much I move around out of excitement and concentration. I finish the credits off sweating like a dog in some cases to really immerse yourself. 

A more than enjoyable watch, though definitely one that's tougher to recommend.

# ~~~Kill La Kill review~~~

~~~The year was 2013. Obama had just started his second term, we were all asking what this damn fox was saying and Studio Trigger released one of the biggest anime originals of all time, Kill la Kill.

Studio Trigger has always had a big load to carry. As a spiritual successor to Gainax, the studio that produced Gurren Laggen and Neon Genesis Evangelion, they really have a legacy to maintain. And still, they, mostly, have carried it. Especially in their first ever work, Kill La Kill.

Kill la Kill has everything. It’s got and incredible story, stylish clothes and transformations, and in studio trigger fashion, incredible Character Design, a magnificent art style, and best of all even some top tier fan service (uff, really had to get out the dictionary for that one)


Let’s start with a really underrated aspect of the anime, which is the Art Style. It’s this strange 90's-like cartoony style that is executed really well, and shows the origins the studio comes from. 

And yet still, with that 90’s style they still had incredible animations. Like yeah maybe not Mappa level but still everything was smooth and well done and i didn’t even see a tiny bit of CGI. Yeah some battles were simplified a bit, to just some simple images, especially in difficult parts, and it sometimes seemed like the characters were just aimlessly hitting swords around. Still, considering this was their first work, and it was probably underfunded plus the fact this was 2013, I say it's excellent work!

Ok, now the fun parts. The story is, *sigh* it’s too big to grasp. It’s very well written, being funny and serious at the same time and having some incredible plot twists. And while it didn’t really leave me reflecting on the meaning of life, its plot changes were enough to completely change my view on some characters. Plus, I know I'm pushing a lot, but the comedy is really well done. It’s very over the top, it ridicules the plot itself sometimes, it uses every medium to it’s disposal (score, animation, voice acting ecc…) to make you laugh and can then pull back to the serious part in mere seconds. 

Like, I know I'm lowkey glazing it, but for example, the final fight isn’t some 2 EP shtick, it starts all the way at EP 17, and it’s 7 episodes of pure action, comedy, emotion and whatnot. It has characters reflecting on their own existence, switching sides, multi stage plans that get destroyed but even bigger multi stage plans, fakes, plot twists here and there and a BUTT LOAD of transformations.

Ok, but I'm seriously getting ahead of myself. I didn’t even explain the basic plot of the anime! 

Meet Ryuuko Matoi. A troubled girl who, after the murder of her father, wanders around our neo-realistic Japan in search of the killer. 
She has only one lead, half of a giant Scissor (i’m 100% serious), a blade created by her father. Ryuuko is sure that by finding the other missing half, she will find the Killer. 
All of this leads her to the prestigious Honnouji Academy, a high school unlike any other. The academy is ruled by the imposing and cold-hearted student council president Satsuki Kiryuuin alongside her powerful underlings, the Elite Four. In the school's brutally competitive hierarchy, Satsuki bestows upon those at the top special clothes called "Goku Uniforms," which grant the wearer unique superhuman abilities.

Ryukko immediately comes in and says “Man, F**k all that” and immediately challenges Satsuki. Of course she is immediately destroyed by a simple club president that wields a 2 star Goku Uniform, not even a 3 star (like the Elite Four). Defeated, she retreats back to the now abandoned and destroyed Matoi mansion.

Here I wanna open a parenthesis on this. Defeat is shown a lot in this show. Sometimes in a comedic way, like here, but later it’s actually seen in a very serious manner. And that’s what I like about Ryukko. While in the end she always wins, it doesn’t come with a series of hardships and problems, with those including defeat. Ok, back to the story now.

There, thanks to some help from a figure I will not reveal (as it constitutes SPOILERS!) she comes into the possession of a Sailor Uniform she dubs Senketsu, that seems to have a will and personality of his own. Senketsu is a Kamui, a special type of uniform. You see, all Goku Uniforms have a special fiber called Life Fibers. These fibers awaken superhuman strength and abilities in their wererears. 

Well, while One star Goku Uniforms have 10% of life fibers, Two stars 20% and so on, a Kamui is composed of 100% life fibers! Having acquired the power to rival even Satsuki, she must now fight against all the battles that the cruel and cold student council president has put against her. 

Along the way she meets Mako Mankanshoku, who, along with her family, brings basically 70% percent of the comedy in this show. Their over the top, exaggerated actions, her hilarious monologues that more often than not motivate and help Ryuuko, make her and the family my favorite characters of the entire show. Like how can you not hate this Dense cutie pie of a girl!

But, there is a problem. To achieve 100% of its power, Senketsu needs to transform. Into what? How do I even describe this? Sugoi. Just sugoi. Not only does this give us some incredible transformation scenes (in reality all Goku uniforms need to transform, but Senketsu is the best, no question) but it also transitions into my next point, the Fan Service!

Even here, they did an incredible job! They embraced the cringy elements, especially with some characters, and gave a lot of treats while never making either a central point of the plot nor being too “in your face” about it. How many more 10/10 can I give!

Before I wrap this up, a little touch on the score. The opening were meh, but I really like the first ending, and the way it’s played in the final episode and how you start to see all the symbolism that you ignored before is really good. The score is good, it hypes you up and as i said, makes you laugh harder in the comedy bits, but nothing special. 

In conclusion, Kill la Kill was a banger of a show. It was Jam Packed with action scenes, and I laughed hard at the over the top and very well written comedy, while actually choking on some of the plot twists. 

Is it worth your time: Fuck Yeah it is.

Is it a must watch: Absolutely
