Also known as Mononoke (2007), Mononoke the Movie, Mononoke The Movie: Phantom in the Rain, Mononoke The Movie: The Ashes of Rage, Mononoke The Movie: The Curse of the Serpent, Gekijouban Mononoke, Ayakashi: Bakeneko, The Medicine Seller
Where to start Mononoke: begin with the Bakeneko arc of Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales (episodes 9-11, 2006), then Mononoke, episode 1 (2007), and the three Mononoke films (2024-2026). This Mononoke watch order follows the Medicine Seller from his first case. He debuts in Ayakashi's Bakeneko story; the rest of Ayakashi (Episodes 1-8) tells unrelated tales, so skip it. Mononoke (Episodes 1-12) is five stand-alone cases, including a second, different Bakeneko story. If you cannot find Ayakashi, starting with Mononoke episode 1 is fine. The film trilogy, Phantom in the Rain (2024), The Ashes of Rage (2025) and The Curse of the Serpent (2026), is one connected story set in the Ooku, with a new Medicine Seller voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya; watch the films in order. Release order and story order are the same.

AnimeChrono watch orders put every season, movie, OVA, ONA and special for a franchise in chronological story order, the order the events happen. When an OVA or movie takes place partway through a season, the episode range is split so it sits where it belongs. Entries you can skip are marked optional, and each order says where to start. Release order, sorted by air date, is a secondary view once every entry has a date. The orders began as a hand-curated set, and episode counts and air dates come from AniList. Fans maintain the orders from there. Any signed-in user can edit one. Edits from trusted contributors go live right away and the rest are reviewed first. Every change is versioned and can be reverted, and each order shows when it was last updated and last checked.

Start with Ayakashi's Bakeneko arc (episodes 9-11), then Mononoke (12 episodes). Then watch the films in order: Phantom in the Rain, The Ashes of Rage, The Curse of the Serpent. Release order and story order match; skipping Ayakashi and starting with Mononoke is fine.
Start with the Bakeneko arc of Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales (episodes 9-11), where the Medicine Seller first appears. Then watch Mononoke from episode 1. Starting directly with Mononoke also works.
It helps but is not required. The films star a different Medicine Seller and tell a new story in the Ooku. The third film brings back the TV series' Medicine Seller, so the series makes that finale land better.
Phantom in the Rain (2024), then The Ashes of Rage (2025), then The Curse of the Serpent (2026). They are one connected trilogy.
